Firstly, I presume that you are well aware of who made this profound statement.
Secondly, this is no trivial matter, as this world abounds in a myriad of religions. For Jesus to make this statement makes it one of the most profound ever uttered, or it makes Jesus the biggest fool who ever lived. There is no middle ground here. He says, no man comes to the Father but by me.
Nearly every religion seeks to answer the need within human beings. It also tries to deal with man's inherent evil, and his desire to be good. Every one has formulas and methods and various works based stipulations that are supposed to make us acceptable to God, or some other supreme being. The range of these activities are far too numerous to mention here, and I trust you are familiar with many.
The inherent flaw in all religions is the fact that these myriad of activities and methods designed to make us right with God, fail miserably when it comes to dealing with the root of the problem, the human heart.
Religions have all kinds of ways to deal with sin, from confession to meditation, but none deal with the heart of man. The fact remains, man is inherently sinful, and cannot stop sinning at will. That is why Jesus gave the statement of this proportion. We cannot make ourselves right with God no matter what we do, and so Jesus offered a way to make us accepted in God's eyes. As any religion that believes in the afterlife, Christianity offers a way to purge our minds and consciences from the curse of sin, the power of sin, and the effects of sin.
Jesus coming to earth as a man, divesting himself of nearly all his power and glory, partaking in all our misery, and finally allowing himself to be put to death on the cross to become the substitute for sin, is what sets Christianity apart from any other religion on earth. All other religions are based on some kind of works to appease God, balance the scales, etc., while Christianity alone offers a solution to our problem, by dealing with the problem at its source, the human heart. Jesus Christ giving Himself as payment for our sins, by shedding His own blood on Calvary, sets us free from the shame and guilt of our sins, which no other method on earth can accomplish. Thus, through His death He reconciled us to God by blotting out our sins and remembering them no more. Heb. 10:12-18. Also, Romans, 4:25, 5:6-10, 1Peter 3:18, Heb. 9:14, etc. Jesus Christ then rose from the dead, and becomes our intercessor before God's throne on our behalf, while he indwells us with His Holy Spirit to enable us to then live for Him, while He continually purifies our conscience as He transforms our lives to actually live holy and blameless in His sight.
No religion on earth offers this kind of love and hope.
Praise God for Jesus Christ.
thanks for your comment. It is our desire to establish a Christ-centered community in or near a city in the near future. But we are still learning a lot of things concerning living in close fellowship with other believers, and a city community would certainly create a big challenge in more ways than one.
First, a city community would probably be a good choice for bringing the truth to many a broken life in the city; a place where people would be helped out of the gutter of sin and hopelessness, and set back on their feet. In that sense, we could see it working. But on the other hand, the city is not an ideal place to raise a family. For young and growing families, a rural setting like ours would work much better. For what would be the advantage, if we would zealously reach out to the lost and dying, and in the process lose our next generation.
Any church can have a great beginning, but the true test of a living church is what happens to the next generation. Are they serving Christ in a living vibrant way, or are they simply existing on the labor of their fathers?
By the way, where do you live? and are you associated with any church or denomination? Just curious...
God bless
God bless
Also Jesus spoke in parables to the crowd so that they would not understand on a human level.
This concept that the church is open to all is a false concept. The church is only open to the saved and the serious seeker who must prove through testing that they are indeed fulled with the Holy Spirit.
The church is most surely not an alternative form of entertainment for the bored. Church services are a fellowship of the saved not a cocktail party for the neighbourhood.
To Bible Study all are certainly welcomed for it is in the preaching of the word that people are saved and not in the breaking of bread which as Jesus showed us is only for the few.
A biblical church can exist in the city, but lets be honest, people go to the city not to find Jesus but to find money and we know one can't serve both.
If one is not willing to give up the fame and fortune and life style of city living to follow Jesus and raise one's children away from an environment catering to the lust of the eyes and flesh, then ones Christianity can not be worth much.
Turning ones back on worldly living is the true test of faith, to come out from amoung them and be separate, even the prodigal son woke and realised that he had to leave the pig-pen in the city and return to his father's house in the countryside. Why should we tarry?
